Could you briefly introduce yourself?
My name is Gabriel Bascou , I have been a professional photographer for 7 years and I have specialized in automobiles and adventure for almost 2 years. My passion for photography was born during my nursing studies, where I initially taught myself before being guided by other photographers. Then, my work was spotted on Instagram , and I was able to start working with my first clients. I wear several hats; I am a photographer, content creator and influencer, and I respond to various orders, but for the past 2 years, I have really chosen to focus on my two passions: automobiles and adventure. I am also an ambassador for an off-road tire brand: BFGoodrich, which has allowed me to further explore my passion for adventures. I am also an ambassador for the Leica brand, a brand that I have always admired. These partnerships are opportunities for me to merge my passion for photography with brands that I appreciate and that represent what I love in life.
As an artistic director, what are your main sources of inspiration and how do you integrate them into your projects?
I really admire the work of professionals like Aaron Brimhall , Josh Aikin and André Josselin . But honestly, my true inspiration doesn't necessarily come from photographers, but rather from films, travel, music, brands, hikes... As an artist, I believe in the importance of being influenced by those you admire, while developing your own artistic identity. For me, creativity lies in the ability to mix elements that have nothing to do with each other - whether it's a past trip, a cooking recipe or a melody heard in the afternoon - to create something new and unique.
Do you have a favorite place to shoot? Or maybe an unforgettable photo experience to share with us?
What I like the most is the atmosphere of beaches and deserts, these are the atmospheres that speak to me the most. An experience that remains etched in my memory is that of the Baja 1000 in Mexico . The desert landscape, the cacti, the waves in the background and the off-road cars that cross the crowd at full speed, it created a great atmosphere that I really loved.
Can you tell us about some of your past professional projects that have left their mark on you or that have been particularly significant to you?
Some of my most notable projects include shooting in Scotland , Utah , and Mexico , each offering truly unique settings that fit my interests. If I had to pick just one, it would be my visit to Moab , Utah , through my partnership with BF Goodrich . This town is often described as the Disneyland of 4x4ing, with 500 miles of trails and the famous Sand Flat. It’s a steep, rocky track that leads to the base of a canyon, where the final challenge is to climb the walls with all four tires on the side. The excitement is incredible, and often a vehicle can’t make it to the top and flips over. It’s these kinds of challenges that make projects even more exciting for me.
What is your favorite part of your job and why?
What I like best is the dynamism , the constant renewal . I need to discover new things to stay motivated and inspired. I particularly appreciate the challenges related to constraints, such as choosing the equipment to take on the field to be efficient. Currently, I focus more on photography than on video, because I find it more spontaneous. What I like most is managing to find the balance between living in the moment and capturing it. It is a real pleasure when brands trust me to create content in universes that fascinate me and give me total artistic freedom. The most rewarding thing about this job is when my artistic touch is recognized and I am asked to do so.
Outside of your work, what are your hobbies or passions that allow you to recharge your batteries and find new inspiration?
My main hobby is sports, especially surfing, but unfortunately I don't do it as often as I would like. I had a surfing accident when I was 19, which is what led me to the medical field, and made me reduce my practice. My goal is to live near the ocean and be able to surf every day. In fact, for me, surfing is one of the only times when you are forced to live in the moment: during a surf session, you are totally immersed in the ocean, far from distractions like phones, and your only goal is to catch a wave and enjoy it. It's a time when you forget your worries, where you live the present moment to the fullest, in perfect harmony with the ocean.
What are your aspirations or dreams that have not yet been realized, whether professionally or personally?
My absolute dream would be to create a concept halfway between the spirit of creative studios like Race Service in Los Angeles, mixing automobiles , art and competition , and my personal passions like Land Rovers , Defenders , Porsches and of course surfing . I would like to bring together all these passions in one place, with a studio part where I could give free rein to my creativity.
How do you deal with periods of creative block, and what are your tips for finding inspiration again?
To be honest, I have gone through several periods of creative block, including one that lasted almost three years, which represents almost half of my career as a photographer. I had a very important client in Paris, a growing start-up that had an exponential need for photos in a field that did not necessarily excite me. This situation completely blocked my creativity, to the point where I almost burned out. Since then, I have understood the importance of maintaining and preserving my creativity. I realized that to stay efficient and inspired, you have to set aside time to recharge your batteries. In fact, inspiration and creativity are essential in our profession. A little over two years ago, I made the decision to change direction. Even if I earn less, I now prioritize quality of life and invest myself in projects that correspond more to my values.
Why did you agree to become an ambassador for Morex Custom?
I immediately connected with the atmosphere of Morex. In fact, it brings together everything I love: surfing , cars , adventure , discovery ... As a photographer, I am inspired by the image and the story that Morex Custom tells. It's a kind of modjo where you savor every moment with your friends doing what you're passionate about: whether it's surfing a wave, hurtling down a road, or just chilling with friends.
Your artistic style seems to reflect values such as freedom, adventure and love for motorized vehicles, themes that also resonate with the Morex brand.
How do you plan to merge your personal aesthetic with the Morex Custom aesthetic in your collaboration with the brand?
What I plan is to preserve this authenticity that characterizes me: I have always been used to creating atmospheres and moods with few means, and this is what I want to transmit in the collaboration. What I would like is to leave with the Morex team, everyone does what they like, and I am simply there to capture these moments. For me, it would be more of a documentary, a visual documentary where each shot tells a story , a moment , a memory .
What is your favorite piece of clothing? What do you think of the new collection?
I have several favorites, I love the Made t-shirt , the Bakel t-shirt , and the Frame overshirt . What I like is this vintage , oversized , slightly crafted look, it's really my style. I already have quite a few clothes from the brand, including a jacket that I wear all the time, I love it. It's an oversized denim jacket with the logo on the back.
